Welcome to New Orleans!
It's a great pleasure to introduce you to our local art scene.
More than Bourbon Street, jazz, and gumbo, our city is home to talented native and transplanted visual artists. Galleries that showcase the work of local painters, creators, and photographers amply dot the French Quarter . Even more artists can be found most weekends in Jackson Square, the center of the historic district. While the summer heat thins the number of creatives hanging work on those classic iron fences, many artists still brave the temperatures to show and sell their work. The city is also known for art and makers markets where locals and guests buy handmade, original work and invest in our vibrant cultural scene.
One of New Orleans' recognizable artists, Epaul Julien, collaborated with the W to bring a sampling of local art poolside. Gold leaf (yes, real gold leaf!) is the basis of this piece. Next layer is hand-painted sheet music for What a Wonderful World, made famous by New Orleans' own, Louis Armstrong. Louis was born less than two miles from the W. Read more of his story here. Magnolias finish the decoration. These mystical, gorgeous flowering giants predate bees. You can find them throughout the area. The piece is then set with resin to weather heat and rain.
Epaul Julien has been a professional artist for nearly three decades. He began in photography, achieved international success, and then went onto master mixed media and paint after Hurricane Katrina. His work is in the Ogden and the New Orleans Museum of Art, as well as Brad Pitt’s, Elton John’s, and other important private collections. Art is how he processes his experience and, as such, his work includes and incites deep feeling, mysticism, and beauty.
You can text me at (814) 243-1727 to schedule a private viewing of his French Quarter studio at 1215 Decatur Street or for a curated deck of available work.
You're in a unique city with prodigious artists. I'd be excited to guide you to art experiences to enjoy and remember. Message me to request more information about written or personally led gallery tours.
Thank you for visiting!
