Learning to teach self-love, a workshop for parents
This is not a workshop about being better.
It's a workshop about love.
And dragons.
Well, one dragon with many forms. the self-rejection dragon.
I'm not a parent, not even a pet owner, but I work with adults who used to be kids. Adults who are held back by the self-rejection they learned as children. Self-rejection is a big word, right? .. or is it phrase? In any case, the practice of self-rejection is actually a much, much quieter experience than that word... or phrase.
Self-rejection is subtle & almost impossible to see because of its pervasiveness in our personal experiences & our culture. Well, you can't see it as the cause, but you actually can see its effects. Things like anxiety, stress, depression, suicide, self-defeating habits, & allllll types of distraction & dissatisfaction can be symptoms of self-rejection.
Self-rejection is patterned when you're trained away from what's natural to you to appease caregivers (even well-meaning ones), fit the school system, or be what somebody 'thinks' you should be. another way you learned it was through watching the adults around you. You know when someone is trying to act other than how they feel, don't you? You see when someone isn't enthusiastic, right? Modeling is the #1 way humans learn the how's, what's, & why's of this world.
Our culture feeds the self-rejection dragon with media, film, & tv that impress our minds with ideas of how we, things, & life should be. Those ideas coalesce into an imaginary version of who you think you should be. All day long you're quietly & subtly measuring yourself against that idea &, of course, falling short of it. I keep emphasizing how it's a quiet & subtle dragon. It's tough to see what's always there, but you can feel it. not being inspired, energetic, or confident can be signs the self-rejection dragon has gotcha.
It feels important to me to support parents in freeing themselves of this dragon so they can save their children the hassle. What if you could give them the tools now to stay out of its reach? What if you could give them real, sturdy self-love by demonstrating it yourself? What if you could teach them to nurture & love themselves as they are, rather than how they think they should be?
What if you learned how to be confident in your ability to see & support them & came to love & appreciate the parent that you ALREADY ARE?
That's why this workshop is actually for you.
Sure, your kids will benefit.
But YOU'RE GREAT & IMPORTANT, TOO.
& by being able to model that truth in healthy, sustainable ways, you'll teach them how to do the same.
In self-love, you're more present to life & others, better able to take care of yourself, & confident to live & enjoy your life, rain or shine.
Over two months, I'll share perspectives, tools, & strategies to improve your ability to love yourself so you can offer your children that same gift. Loving yourself is more than spa days. It's seeing, accepting, & supporting what's most natural to you. It's letting you & life be what it is so you can enjoy & make the most of both. It's empowering yourself with supportive inner dialogue, a mindfulness practice, & awareness of what's right for you.
In self-love, you're confident & wholistic in your thinking & acting which adds up to healthier lifestyles, relationships, minds, & a shared world.
& wouldn't that be a great gift to give the kids?
